I am proposing to merge 2 collaborations into solving a New School community problem.
The problem with the New School is having a radio station that is under developed because of lack of applied technology. The New School radio is a website that lacks humanity, does not broadcast live, inconveineint to listen to. The Communication Design Technology department of Parsons can offer vast improvements to fix these problems. As a grad student in this department, I can visualize potential for enhancing the New School experience by a sound installation. This installation will be inside the Sheila Johnson center on 18 feet long ramp that connects two buildings. The initial design intention is to recreate a transition towards nirvana. This experience of nirvana is subjective by the audience.
The majority audience, students who take courses at the New School, will pass through this ramp. The next group of audience is faculty, staff, administration, security, custodian, guest speakers, designers, and prospective students. This audio space on this particular ramp can be used to make these people feel good through sound. The particular sounds that can benefit these people can be a 15 second PSA, up beat tunes, classical music, jazz music, design contest announcement, and New School Radio.
A typical user scenario is a CDT student walking briskly to her next design class. As she enters the transition ramp, an announcement is made in the background, "enter a $25,000 brand design contest, log on to tirebrandcontest.com for more information." Her response is OMG, I have to check this out when I get up to class. She arrives on the 10th floor for class and logs onto the website because she needs to pay her next semester tuition at Parsons.
Another typical user scenario are two students just standing there and socializing. The background jazz music is enticing them to linger and socialize for 5 minutes before they both depart for class. Having this presence of students feeling comfortable to socialize is important. This 5 minutes of socializing with jazz music in the background can make a huge difference in the experience on this ramp.
The presence of audio on this ramp can benefit the audience experiences through pleasant announcements, jazz music from our Jazz Department, classical music from Mannes, and music from Communication Design Technology.
During user testing and collecting responses to user scenarios, the presence of playful sound can bring out laughter.
